Microsoft sells the license of Windows 10 to normal users via Retail or OEM channel. If you have purchased a Retail copy of Windows 10 operating system, then you may switch the product key to another laptop.
Also, it appears that there may be no limit on the range of instances that you can switch a retail license to a another system as long as you properly deactivate the old installation. The function can be useful in case you are selling your computer system for a new system.
We’ve divided the product key transfer procedure in 2 phases.
1. Deactivate the license key on your current device
2. Install the license key for your new device.
Following is the step by step manual for the complete process.
How to deactivate key from your old device?
First, to switch your license key to another laptop, you will have to deactivate the license from the current device. Follow these steps for the same.
1. Open Start menu.
2. Search for Command Prompt, right click on Command Prompt (top result) and choose "Run as administrator".
3. Now, inside the command prompt, enter the following command:
slmgr.Vbs /upk
4. If you also want to remove the product key from the registry, enter the subsequent command:
slmgr.Vbs /cpky
5. Once the steps are completed, your old device will be deactivated.
Even in case you put off the product key and deactivate your Windows 10 license, you may still continue using your old device, however it will not be dealt with as a genuine replica of Windows and some capabilities like personalizing the desktop may not work.
How to put in license within the new system?
1. Open Start menu.
2. Search for Command Prompt, right click on Command Prompt (top result) and choose "Run as administrator" option.
3. Type the given command to reuse the Windows 10 license key from another pc and press Enter.
slmgr /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
Here, you need to update xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx with the real product key.
4. Type the subsequent command to verify the activation and press Enter.
slmgr/dlv
5. Check under the “License Status” section and ensure the status reads “Licensed” to verify that Windows 10 is fully activated.

Once you have completed the above steps, your copy of Windows 10 should be activated. If you face any trouble in activating the Windows 10 license, enter slui 4 in command prompt and comply with the on-screen steps to activate your license manually.
